English Fitted Gown: The Design

I've been planning an English fitted gown based on the patterns from the Tudor Tailor.

I've changed the design somewhat from my initial sketches...

I decided against the puffed sleeves...both because they were difficult and scary to construct and because I think the plain sleeves look more mature to a modern aesthetic (and in period I would be very mature indeed!).

But the biggest change is the colour of the kirtle.  I still have some burgundy wool earmarked for this project (eventually) but for now I thought I should go with something that will also go nicely my new waistcoat.

For this outfit I will also need:
  • Linen shift (with either a square neck or high collar)
  • Petticoat, in either wool or linen
  • Partlet (especially if I opt for the square-necked shift)
  • Some sort of head covering (certainly a coif, and possibly a hat as well)
Accessories may include:
  • An over-partlet
  • Ruff
  • Corded petticoat
  • Stays (if I decided against boning or otherwise re-enforcing the kirtle)
  • Gloves
So that's it for now! Hopefully this won't languish for another 3 years!
